“Cyberfrog 2: Rekt Planet” Reaches 200k in less than Two Hours
Earlier today the comic book creator Ethan Van Sciver launched the crowdfunding campaign for the sequel to his 2018 smash hit Cyberfrog: Bloodhoney. The campaign proceeded to earn over 200 thousand dollars in less than 2 hours, doubling what Bloodhoney earned in its first 24 hours.
Bloodhoney previously held the record for the largest crowdfunded comic going on to earn $538,456 over its initial campaign. Rekt Planet is on pace to beat that figure within a few days.
Van Sciver and Cyberfrog have become flagship figures, alongside Richard C. Meyer’s Jawbreaker’s franchise, in the ComicsGate consumer movement. Which started in 2017 as a response to a rift between the mainstream comics industry and the fans that buy comics. Ethan and Meyer are leading the charge in building a new independent comic industry that has among their core tenants respect for the end buyer. Since 2017 this budding indie industry has drawn attention from big-name creators such as Doug TenNapel.
The success of Rekt Planent comes as the ComicsGate movement has faced claims from critics that the interest in independent projects is waning as recent ComicsGate indie campaigns have not met the record-shattering figures of Jawbreaker’s Lost Souls or Cyberfrog Bloodhoney.
The breakaway success of Rekt Planet suggests that it was no fluke, and Ethan’s amphibious action hero has found an audience that is thirsty for more. And with Richard Meyer’s getting to work on big franchises like Expendable’s, it is becoming clear that the ComicsGate creators have successful futures ahead.
